Public Art Design & Engineering | Hemmings Street, Dandenong.
Whistle supports councils like the City of Greater Dandenong in the design, engineering and implementation of Pubic Art projects.
In 2019, the City of Greater Dandenong approached Whistle to develop three large-scale steel sculptures as part of a council street upgrade project in Hemmings Street, Dandenong. Community members were asked what sort of public art they would like to see introduced to the area.
The overwhelming majority supported engaging the local community in the artmaking process and featuring bold, abstract colours while delivering designs that would integrate with the existing gardens and landscaping. The resulting work, ‘Nourish Creativity and it Grows’, is a colourful display of public art comprised of three totems and a wall mural.

Overview.
Illustrator Beci Orpin developed the visual concept, employing a co-design process with local students at Dandenong West Primary. Students were asked to create pet rocks and pebble creatures during an arts and craft activity, creating colourful and quirky characters that would be brought to life through the design process.
The imaginative drawings were then photographed and sent to the illustrator. We were tasked with transforming the 2D forms into three dimensional, full scale and interactive totems.
We explored various ideas to introduce depth and texture to the designs, utilising SolidWorks and KeyShot to generate photorealistic renders. The mechanical design of the totems was then conducted in collaboration with the end manufacturer, Catten Industries, ensuring viability of manufacturing, assembly and installation.
The installations succeeded in improving the overall amenity and appearance of the street scape, punctuating an otherwise unassuming shopping strip with colour and optimism.
