OVERVIEW

In 2020, Whistle undertook a concept redevelopment proposal for the Kawasaki license – putting forward a reimagined brand theme that would stand out amongst a saturated market and offer an elevated user experience of an already familiar product.

With cordless, brushless drills now the gold standard of the premium power tool niche, the theme was applied to the hero of the product range, but conjures endless possible applications, and the development of an entire ‘family’ range of subsequent products.

THE DESIGN APPROACH

THEME DEVELOPMENT

The goal was to craft a distinct brand identity, with aesthetic references and design features that could be easily translated from one product to the next. These visual guidelines ensure clear and consistent messaging, imparting confidence in the performance, quality and reliability of the brand as a whole.

The early-stage exploration included market research of the current landscape of products in market, exploring various price points, colour ways and surface finishes  – with the goal of differentiation kept at the forefront of the project at all times. We developed mood boards establishing sources of inspiration – and in turn theme boards, distilling two to three key concepts that were to be considered for further development.

Lastly, the selected design was honed and refined, establishing a style and brand guide that inform the look and feel of any future product outcomes and ensure clear specifications would be provided for manufacture.

PRODUCTION REQUIREMENTS

DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE

Design for manufacture (DFM) is key to our working model – the practice involves extensive planning in the design phase which ensures our products are engineered to be as physically compact as possible, while remaining efficient, ergonomically optimised and featuring centre-of-gravity to match. We also engage readily with manufacturers, ensuring the design is suitable and practical for high-volume assembly.
