Access Control Keypad Design | LiftMaster LM 780EV.
In 2022, Whistle supported Chamberlain Group with an Access Control Keypad Design & Development project for their European division under the LiftMaster brand. We were tasked with developing a versatile and thoroughly modern design, based on the existing platform. Our designers set about creating a number of theme, before quickly moving in 3D CAD to validate designs and focus on premium materials and construction methods.

Concept Development.
To help set a direction for the aesthetic form of the Access Control Keypad Design, our designers quickly put together 16 variations on forms, some more traditional, and some that would push the boundaries of the segment in terms of materials and technologies. We were able to quickly visualise layouts and architecture for the system, before settling on a preferred direction.
Moving from sketch into 3D early on allowed our designs to quickly validate the preferred direction and further refine the concept. Three fleshed out concepts were presented to the client, with the client settling on the more rounded, softer pill-shaped aesthetic. A series of 3D prints followed to confirm sizing and keypad ergonomics, before handover to our engineers to bring the design to life.
Engineering & Prototyping.
With the concept direction set, our engineers set about build Design-For-Manufacture ready 3D CAD and production drawings. Through constant collaboration with Chamberlain’s own Engineering team, our engineers built out all the physical parts, including an IP rated silicone keypad design, ready to fit the provided electronic components. Whistle supported testing of the IP rating to ensure the design was fit for purpose.
Our workshop then produced a number of high resolution, tight tolerance SLA prototypes for verification and a series of CNC ABS visual prototypes, finished in gloss and matte, in both white and black, to be sent to Europe for production sign-off.
All up, we were concept to production in under 12 months, well done to all!
